Chumbe Island Lodge

Chumbe Island Lodge maintains and upholds their eco friendly ethos, which has been rewarded and rightly so.

The lodge is not for everybody we love it and we even have one member of staff who worked on the island for a few months – so we know it well.

There are a total of 7 specially designed eco bungalows, with en suite facilities. They have a high roof which is where the bedroom is located, as well as a lounge/living area including hammocks.

The fresh water supply depends solely on rainwater capture. This water is then pumped to each bungalow (by hand).

The waste water is filtered into a reed bed system, ensuring no foul water contaminates the reef sanctuary. A very ingenious system. Each room has a de composing toilet.

Solar power is used for the lighting.

The Bungalows are open on all sides, to allow the cool breeze to billow though- natures own air conditioning. Each bungalow is set well away from the next ensuring total privacy from other guests

A boat service departing from Mtoni Marine taking about an hour is the mode of transport to reach Chumbe and once you are there. Kick off your shoes say goodbye to your mobile phone and think desert island discs.

The Chumbe lighthouse is worth a visit if you can master the hundred + steps – the view is stunning.
