Mnemba Island Lodge

Situated approximately 3 miles off of the north coast of Zanzibar, the island of Mnemba is a romantic coral island retreat, ideal for guests seeking barefoot luxury and good diving and snorkelling facilities. During December and March, the rare Green turtle can often be seen laying their eggs in the sands.

The 10 luxury Bandas of Mnemba Island Lodge are constructed on wooden platforms from traditionally woven palm matting and are set at the fringe of the pine forest at the centre of the island. With their own veranda and private pathway, the bandas also have chairs, outdoor swing beds, and loungers for guests’ relaxation. Each room is decorated in traditional style with African prints and natural materials. Each banda has an ensuite bathroom, which is detached from the banda and is accessed by a walkway.

The dining and bar area have been constructed with thatched roofs and are situated along the beach, offering sea views to the coral reefs beyond.

Freshly caught fish and seafood are regularly served along with fresh fruit and other more exotic dishes. Cocktails can be enjoyed watching the stunning sunsets. Meals can be served by candlelight at the waters edge for those romantic moments!

The lodge’s philosophy is one of trying to maintain an ecological balance. The island is surrounded by the Mnemba Reef, a marine reserve, which is teaming with fish and this has made Mnemba Island the top dive site in the area. With its clear waters, the reef has approximately 4 times the range of fish found in the Caribbean. Visibility is generally best between November and March. The island house reef drops away to approximately 40 metres, with the Great Wall plunging from 35 to 70 metres – dolphins and turtles are regularly seen during dives. The hotel has a fully equipped PADI dive school for guests. Snorkelling, windsurfing, kayaking and fishing is also available here. A definite must for divers.
