Pongwe Beach Lodge
A small, intimate property of just 16 rooms, Pongwe Beach Lodge is set on one of the best beaches on Zanzibar, a little off the beaten track on the north eastern side of the island. The secluded beach is set between two coral outcrops and has a number of loungers and hammocks where guests can relax in the sun.
The white washed beach cottages are set in private gardens backing onto the white sand beach. All are built in a traditional Zanzibari style with handcrafted wooden doors. All rooms have wooden beds with mosquito nets, a private terrace and en-suite facilities with a walk-in shower in Moroccan style. Each room has its own private terrace where you can enjoy the sunrise and sunset as well as a leisurely breakfast.
The restaurant serves both local and international cuisine and is one of the best on the island, with staff trained by a consultant chef from England. Set back from the beach under a makuti roof, the bar and dining area also has a choice of books and board games to help ease the days away.
The infinity pool is a perfect spot to cool off, have a drink and enjoy the chilled relaxed atmosphere of the property. Water sports are available in the clear blue waters of the bay, be it swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving which can be arranged locally. The hotel has a boat that can be used for big game fishing or a romantic sunset cruise.
With easy access to the rest of the island, despite its remote location, it is possible to arrange visits around the island (the roads are very quiet apart from the odd chicken or two), so you can explore and experience all the sights that Zanzibar has to offer its guests.
