Sand Rivers Tented Camp
Sand Rivers is a small camp set on a rocky peninsula overlooking the magnificent sweep of the Rufiji River. This river is the lifeblood of theĀ untamed Selous wilderness and is the largest waterway in East Africa. The exposed sandbanks of the camp are home to hippo, crocodile and fascinating birdlife.
The camp consists of 8 large and airy stone and thatched cottages. Each cottage is open fronted with a wide veranda set on stilts affording a stunning view across the river. The cottages are set in pairs along the river bank. Each has a four poster bed and spacious en suite facilities with flush toilets and solar heated hot water.
The central dining area has been designed using local wood and stone and overlooks the bar and swimming pool which is set into the rocks on the rivers edge. This area is shaded by ancient baobab trees thought to be more than 1500 years old. There are armchairs and sofas dotted around this area for relaxing in and the nearby bar area has a library of books should you need some reading matter.
Flexibility is the key here. You can choose to do walking safaris, boat trips and even bush camp safaris should you choose. The 4×4 safari vehicles have open sides for maximum photograph opportunities and you can choose to do 2 half day or a full days safari.
The boat safaris are taken in flat bottomed aluminium boats and you can choose to travel downstream game and bird viewing, or upstream to Steiglers Gorge where the river narrows into a deep gorge. Leopard is sometimes spotted here and the landscape is very different to that around the river.
