Speke Bay Lodge
Situated on the south eastern shore of Lake Victoria, Speke Bay Lodge, part of the Speke Gulf, is located 15 kilometres from the Serengeti National Park. Its name comes from the famous explorer, John Hanning Speke who in 1858 discovered that the source of the Nile was in fact Lake Victoria.
There are 8 bungalows at Speke Bay, each situated along the shores of the lake. Each bungalow has private facilities with solar panelled heated water, as well as a loft room with twin beds, making the property ideal for families. Large French doors lead to a flower covered outside veranda area, with seating where you can choose to read or simply watch the world go by.
The main buildings are round in form and painted white with thatched grass roofs in the tradition of the local tribe, the Sukuma. The bar, restaurant and lounge are 3 separate buildings, connected by a large terrace overlooking the lake. The restaurant offers a blend of international and traditional cuisine, including fresh fish from the lake, whilst the bar is well stocked with South African wines. Should you choose, breakfast and lunch can be served on your veranda, on the terrace, in the garden or even on the beach!
There is also a small gift shop selling locally produced art and crafts – ideal gifts to take home with you.
There are many activities available to guests at Speke Bay. Explore Lake Victoria by canoe, take a mountain bike out into the heart of Sukumaland to see Tanzania ‘off the beaten track’ or go fishing for Tilapia, catfish, barbel or small cichlids. Alternatively, with over 150 species of birds living on the Lodge’s savannah, you could spend some time spotting African Fish Eagles, red chested sunbird, yellow backed weaver, blue headed coucal and brown throated weaver.
Being only 15 kilometresfrom the Ndabaka Gate, Speke Bay Lodge is an ideal starting point for a safari into the Serengeti. Resident herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle as well as elephant, cheetah, lion and sometimes crocodile can be viewed here.
