Butiama Beach Lodge Mafia

Butiama Beach Lodge Mafia, is located in a tropical palm grove on the beach and has everything you need to unwind and relax. You can stroll for miles along deserted sandy beaches, and if you’re lucky you may spot some of the growing population of whale sharks resident there over the summer months.

There are 10 bungalows (including 2 family bungalows) at Butiama Beach Lodge, scattered among the coconut palms just 50 meters from the stunning beach. Each bungalow is beautifully furnished with unique furniture – hand crafted from the hardwoods of retired sailing dhows, and decorated with kikois – charming, colourful hand woven cotton sarongs. Each bungalow is fully equipped with hot water, mosquito nets and yacht fans and has spacious veranda on which to enjoy the evening breeze and watch the sun set.

There are many tempting culinary delights at Butiama. Start the day with a full breakfast of muffins, pancakes, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, bacon and eggs. At lunchtime choose from an array of tempting light dishes. Refuel, replenish and revive yourself at the lovely wave-lapped beach bar and restaurant, Chiringuito. Tea, coffee, and herbal infusions are always available to perk you up at any time. In the evening, enjoy a full 3 course dinner – the perfect way to end your day.

There is much to do and see on Mafia. Scuba dive, fish and swim with the world’s largest fish – whalesharks; go sailing in a traditional dhow to nearby islands, sand banks, or other beaches; or take a kayak and explore the beach front or further afield. Mafia has some of the world’s richest reefs, as well as being a meeting place for various turtle species and many oceanic fish.

Discover the native trees, animals and birdlife of the island; take excursions to experience local village life and watch skilled craftsmen at work. You can explore the ruins of the ancient city of Kua on Juani Island; get a taste of history at Kisimani; or head to Chole Island, where you will gain a fascinating insight into the traditional life of a peaceful and industrious village community.

Get away from it all and take a Land Rover to the north of the island and explore Mafia’s miles and miles of secluded pristine beaches.

And when you have finished exploring the island, you can have a relaxing massage to unwind before settling down to watch the sunset!

Staying at the Butiama Beach Lodge was also a very good experience. The location was very nice with a beautiful beach and very convenient to see the whale sharks. We were lucky we were just there at the right season.

The lodge was very tastefully decorated and conveyed an impression of peace and relaxation which was just what we were looking for after a week of safari. The hotel staff were very nice, efficient and friendly. The room was beautiful and very comfortable.

We really enjoyed the fresh food coming directly from the fishermen’s catch of the day and the Italian twist to the menu coming from the manager. We enjoyed having a good cocktail and discussing at the bar before having dinner next to the beach.

The activities were very enjoyable and reasonably priced. We really liked diving with the whale sharks, it was very impressive. We also got to see humped back whales on the same day. The snorkelling in the marina and around the sand bank were also great, we saw a lot of colourful fishes and corals. The visit of Chole Island was not as pleasant as the other activities.

We were also offered a complimentary sunset cruise as we were on honeymoon. Enjoying the sunset in a sailing boat with a glass of Prosecco was a unique experience.
