Matemwe Lodge

Matemwe Lodge (previously the Matemwe Bungalows) is located on the north east coast of Zanzibar, close to Matemwe village. The whole lodge was completely upgraded in 2005 and is part of the Asilia Group.

The property has twelve thatched cottages and four deluxe bungalows. Each room is large and has plenty of space with an en-suite bathroom, with bath. A private shaded veranda and hammock can be found outside each room. All the rooms face the Indian Ocean.

There are two pools at Matemwe Lodge. One is an infinity pool on the edge of the coral outcrop, with stunning view towards Mnemba. From this top pool the water cascades (well nearly) into the pool below.

The lower pool is well shaded, with a pool bar close by serving a variety of drinks and bar snacks throughout the day. There are also lounging chairs around the pool.

The main dining room stands on a coral outcrop with great view across the sea. Most meals are taken in this dining room. Food is excellent with plenty of fresh salads, fruit and seafood. The staff are particularly helpful.

Well tended tropical shrubs and plants line the pathways to the bar, swimming pools and dining area. There is a great big outdoor chess set which paves the way to a stretch of beach used by Matemwe guests.

This part of the beach is gorgeous, but it is used by the local villagers for fishing and seaweed collection. It can also be quite windy – so most guests prefer to be by one or other of the pools.

Matemwe Lodge is particularly popular for honeymooners and those who just want to chill.
