Mbweni Ruins

Mbweni Ruins Hotel is on the sheltered West Coast, 6 kilometres from Stone Town and the Harbour. Set in luscious botanic gardens, gradually leading down from the ruins to the beach, the grounds are home and paradise to many species of butterflies and birds. Mangroves dot the sea, providing a habitat for jewelled fish and birds including the gorgeous Mangrove Kingfisher.

There are 13 suites and all but one has a balcony. All the rooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans and louvered windows to the balcony. They are furnished in exotic Zanzibar style and every room has views of the Indian Ocean and of the gardens. The Baobab Suite is perfect for honeymoons and for that extra special occasion! This spacious suite, complete with king-sized four poster bed, has its own rooftop terrace with spectacular views over the ocean, the ruins and the garden. The scent of frangipani and hibiscus is everywhere.

The Raintree Restaurant, set on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, offers delicious combinations of International and Zanzibari food. The chefs use fresh market produce and seafood specialities from the Indian Ocean and there is often a beach BBQ for guests in the evening. A bar has being built out from the cliff by the restaurant, and a spiral staircase leads down to the beach where a jetty enables guests to take dhow trips to Stone Town, to the islands, or for a sunset cruise.

There are many things to do at Mbweni. Take a boat trip on a traditional dhow, enjoy a canoe or kayak trip or take a cooling swim or snorkel in the sea. Alternatively, pamper yourself at the Bustani Spa where you can enjoy a healing ayurvedic therapy.

This is a perfect hotel for those who want to be close to the museums, shops and restaurants of Stone Town, whilst remaining on the beach. It is only 15 minutes by car to the centre of Zanzibar’s capital, and Mbweni provide a free shuttle service three times daily.
