Olduvai Tented Camp

Olduvai Tented Camp is located in south central Serengeti, half-way between the Ngorogoro Crater rim and Ndutu.

Olduvai Camp stands at the base of a kopje on the southern edge of the Serengeti. It is run by Maasai and is ideally situated to explore the southern plains of the Serengeti.

January through to March/April the whole area comes alive when the region welcomes the wildebeest migration.

You do not have to restrict yourself to only visiting between January to April, this part of the Serengeti is home to many resident species and the location is a welcome break between the Ngorongoro Highlands and the further reaches of Serengeti.

Olduvai Tented Camp has 16 walk in tents, each of which is built on a concrete base with a thatched roof. Each tents has twin or double beds the en suite facilities include flushing toilet hot and cold water shower.

It is a good base from which to explore the nearby Olduvai Gorge and to experience Maasai culture as well as enjoy the wildlife especially when the migration is on the short grass plains.

Despite having been upgraded considerably over the years, Olduvai Tented Camp remains essentially a bush camp with style. The idea is to provide a middle ground in which guests and Maasai can meet on equal terms, rather than some ultra-luxurious lodge which would cause the locals to retreat into themselves.

We had the most amazing holiday in Tanzania and Zanzibar and were so pleased with the itinerary we did so a very big thank you to both of you for all your advice – for listening to our requirements and dreams.

All three camps were exactly what we had dreamed of – small, intimate, friendly, lovely staff and natural settings/furnishings etc. We feel priviledged to have stayed in such natural surroundings. Olduvai was the best and thank you for the drinks on sunset rock.

We cannot choose a favourite lodge – they were all so wonderfully different. Our highlights – the ‘Out of Africa’ tented lodge and Maasai walk (Olduvai).

Tanzania was incredible, Christine. We had such an amazing time – finding ourselves in the heart of the migration on the Serengeti plains, and watching the scavenging hyena and jackal edging their way closer to the feeding lions (with the vultures circling overhead), it was an incredible experience. Even the off road trip to the swamp one morning – Isaaya stopped the vehicle to provide us with some history about the heron he’d spied (he was incredibly knowledgeable, and had great eyesight) and the jeep filled with tsetse fly! Not a pleasant experience, but we wouldn’t change it for the world – it was all part of our adventure. And I understand the Tsetse fly has been attributed to the partial success of the Serengeti game reserve… driving out all the settlors. I can understand that!

Olduvai was amazing – the place and the camp. The tents were huge, well equipped and with beautiful bathrooms. They really gave the Indiana Jones feel. Although tents, they were within a solid structure which felt very secure. Food, as with everywhere on our Tanzania visits, was wonderful and plentiful. Staff were warm and welcoming. It was great to be able to explore around the camp and to climb up to the viewpoint at the top of the kopje. A highlight was seeing the genet cat which lives around the camp. The walk with the Masai around the local river gorge was truly memorable. I would love to return.
