Southern Sun Hotel

The Southern Sun Hotel is a large modern hotel located in Dar es Salaam, the bustling commercial capital of Tanzania.

It is situated next door to the Botanical Gardens and it is just a 3 minute stroll to the local fish market and 5 minutes walk to the town centre.

The 152 rooms have all the amenities you would expect from a city centre hotel. These include satellite television, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, designer toiletries and a pillow menu detailing the 5 types of pillow you can choose from. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Rooms have city, ocean or pool views.

The Southern Sun Hotel has two restaurants. The Kivulini Restaurant is located on the mezzanine floor with views out over the swimming pool and the Botanical Gardens. It serves delicious buffet breakfasts. The Baraza Grill, Café and Bar is open for lunch and dinner and serves a fusion between Swahili and continental cuisine.

The hotel has an outdoor pool which, although small, is relatively quiet.

The staff are helpful and friendly and do all they can to assist you during your stay. The Southern Sun Hotel is an excellent choice for an overnight in Dar es Salaam.

  1. Helen and Jonathan

This is a business hotel in the heart of Dar es Salaam. It was comfortable and the staff readily changed our room when we pointed out that our non-smoking room smelled of smoke. We ate there for convenience and it was fine. The reason for our stay was a nostalgic visit to the city where Jonathan lived when young. He remembered learning to swim at Oyster Bay but sadly his memories of the white tropical beach were now somewhat tarnished by the debris littering the beach, visible at low tide. Go2Tanzania arranged a driver not just to collect and deliver us to the airport, but also to tour the neighbourhood looking for old haunts and we were delighted to visit two of the houses he used to live in. However the undoubted highlight was an unscheduled visit to his old primary school, where we were joyously welcomed by the teachers and pupils and had a photograph taken of him sitting in “his” old wooden desk, surrounded by ecstatically happy, smiling faces.
