Chumbe is a small protected marine island. It is part of the Zanzibar archipelago. The island is dedicated to eco conservations and is an excellent example of what can be done if you try.
The reserve has a shallow water reef with beautiful protected coral, a forest relying on rain water for its survival – an astonishing phenomena in its own right. There are a number of small paths that intertwine with each other and you are able to walk under the canopy, which helps to protect this delicate environment from the tropical sun.
The shallow reef does mean Chumbe is one of the few destinations where you do not have to be a diver to see the gorgeous coral a snorkel and mask will surfice.
The island is privately managed and there is only one option for accommodation which is Chumbe Island Lodge. Please see our lodge section for a full detailed description of the lodge.
If you want to be away from the crowds then Chumbe is a MUST.
